Cheers | As well as Deerstalker's suggestion I also recommend:
Pocket guide to Butterflies of GB + Ireland by Richard Lewington (British Wildlife Publishing)
Superb plates by our finest insect illustrator with egg, caterpillar, pupa + adults all illustrated, distribution maps + life history tables so you know what time of year a butterfly should be flying or larva, etc with a good basic text. Only £9.95 when I bought mine- maybe cheaper on Amazon, etc? |

| | | Re: Painted Ladies Managed to see 2 or 3 Painted Ladies around London today- 1 + maybe a different one on Verbena bonariensis in my garden late afternoon + earlier we went to Kew where butterfly numbers were low but we saw 1 there along with 3 Red Admirals, a tatty Peacock, 1 each of Small, GV + Large White, a Meadow Brown, 3 Speckled Wood, a Holly Blue + Purple Hairstreak.
Dragonfly numbers were better with many Common Darters + Migrant Hawkers as well as Southern + 3 Brown Hawkers, a fresh looking male Emperor, 2 male Ruddy Darters + a few Common Blue, Blue-tailed + Small Red-eyed Damsels. |

Cheers | Well I've always found my Collins Nature Guide (Butterflies and Moths of Britain and Europe) edition pretty useful
Had loads of Peacocks yesterday, Small Tortoiseshells and Large Whites! | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
