| | | ID required Took this shot a while ago but forgot about it until tonight. No idea what this is, the shot was taken in rough grassland surrounding a local lake.Size was roughly the same as a large Hoverfly (around 20-25mm).
When it flew onto the plant i initially thought it was a Burnet as the flight was very slow and lazy.
Any ideas on ID would be much appreciated....

| | | Re: ID required Thanks WW, i`ve had a search on the web after your suggestion and found a few similar Robber Flies but nothing exact. Closest i`ve found is Dioctria rufipes, but on the pics i`ve found the last set of legs on the latter are all black, unless theres variation between the sexes?

| | | Re: ID required Noticed this image which came up in the random selection at the top of the forums page... http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/ga...=33021&catid=2
Looks very similar but the fly in my pic was quite a bit larger than this one.

| | | Re: ID required I've done a bit of work with Bibionid flies (Sy MArks fly) and your fly looks like one of the males due to the eye shape. By this I mean that the upper surface is hugely faceted like a radar dome (looking for females), and the ventral part of the eye is significantly different.
I think it might be Bibio pomonae

| | | Re: ID required Yes i agree with this Bibio pomonae, a St Marks fly was the first i thought of when i saw the photo. |

| | | Re: ID required Thanks for the ID Bugbotherer and Dogghound. I`ve only come across female St Marks flies prior to getting that shot, didnt realise there was so much difference between the sexes.
