| | | Identify insect but no pic!! Last night a bug flew into the house and I have never seen one like it.
It escaped before I could get a pic but it did land on my arm for a sec so here is some info on it.
1. About an inch long
2. Had wing covers which were black with 3 red lines on each one in head to tail direction.
3. The tail extended beyond the wing covers and ended in a point.
4. The antenae were black with orange like bulbs on the end.
5. The body was black.
6. Looked like a ladybird but never seen one so big with stripes and an elongated body.
I live in orkney in the middle of nowhere.
If you can help it would be great, thanks in advance |

| | | Re: Identify insect but no pic!! Sounds like a Nicrophorus species burying beetle, except these have red stripes going across the wing covers rather than down them.
They feed on carrion, and they do come to light at night.

| | | Re: Identify insect but no pic!! Thanks for info but the one I saw was more narrower looking with darker wing cases and a black abdomen extending beyond the wing cases and ending in a point. The picture is close though |

Greg | I'd go with this one. the description fits pretty well with some of these burying beetles | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
