| | | Re: small or essex? (cont.) According to our more knowledgeable members, the tip must be black all round, as if dipped in an ink pot. I can see from your top one that the rear of the antenna is brown not black, so by that I'd say they're Small Skipper.
What do I know though! I'm more confused by these little blighters than anyone else. |

| | | Re: small or essex? (cont.) Middle shot looks classic Essex Skipper with underside of antennae tip looking as though dipped in black ink as Dan mentions. Bottom photo doesn't show underside of antennae so can't be sure on this. Top looks Essex, but angle of shot makes me less certain than in middle shot. |

| | | Re: small or essex? (cont.) Photo one and two are the same skipper, you can see plainly the black undersides to the tips especially in photo 2, photo three I think is a male and I have taken this to highlight the scent marks that are visible on the wings and vary between the essex and the small skipper.
They look like essex to me, but because these are so far from the estabished accepted distribution area I would welcome a positive id.
Thanks Owen |

| | | Re: small or essex? (cont.) Looks like Essex to me. Your first picture appears to show black tips on the underside of the antennae, and this male (picture 3) shows a straight sex brand, which is diagnostic from Small which is a bit wavey.

| | | Re: small or essex? (cont.) Just been confirmed today that these are Essex skippers. The distribution map shows them to be found mostly in south and east england -I spotted these in south west scotland, dont know if this is an isolated population. Has anyone seen any in the north of England? | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
