Beetle and odd fly ID please

Last month I found this odd fly:

have no idea what it is

Also found this possible Lagria hirta but the wing cases look to short and wide

Wild guess for the fly but it looks like a Conopid. As to the beetle your hunch was correct.

I agree it looks like a conopid fly which are parasitic on other insects.

There are, to the best of my knowledge (although I don't have the book ) only two members of the distinctive genus Lagria in western Europe and only L. hirta is found in UK although L. atripes is found in France ...

... it is a somewhat fatter beast?

This may be a case where you need an expert to look at a specimen .... where was it found?

The conopid fly is Sicus ferruguneus.
