It's funny you should say that - I've just been looking at some images of them. I must admit, it's probably the closest I've seen yet, but I'm still not sure it's the right one. The colouring was very similar, but was much more muted than the colour in the photo's. Also, the thorax was much larger, as was the overall size. How big do the Volucella zonaria grow to?

Stubbs- the hoverfly ID bible gives winglength up to 19.5 mm. If colours were muted it may have been an old specimen that had faded.

Could it have been a Hornet Moth - Seisa apiformis?. I've always wanted to see one of those. I think there is another that is similar - the Lunar hornet moth as well
