Hi everyone,
I caught this Footman in the moth trap last night. I was wondering whether leg colour varies in a species because I would've said this is a Common Footman, but in the books and in pictures I've seen of them the leg colour is black whereas in this individual they're yellowy. 
So do the leg colours vary or is this a different species, Hoary or Scarce possibly.

Hi
I can't tell you about the legs but it looks like a Common to me as the stripe on the forewing tapers.

Common. Another thing to look for is the collar, which on the Common has a small central grey area  |

Thanks everyone for confirming the id and also for the useful id tips. I suppose the legs must just vary in the species then, or possibly male/female difference?

it might be a scarce footman verty similar only scarce footman has yellowy legs |

The Common has a flatter appearance whereas the Scarce has a more rounded appearance due to the wings folding around the body. The Common doesn't do that.

This is Scarce Footman from a couple of nights ago, (not a great image but good enough for ID purposes) note what John said about wing shape, also look at the collar which has no grey central area  |

Hmmm... I thought that this one (who joined me at my PC late last night) was a scarce footman but having read this thread I'm no longer so sure. What do you think?  
After posing docilely on my desk for a while he flew onto my PC speaker and was peeking over the top so I bunged on an extension tube for a head close-up...
