Who lives in a house like this?!?

Hi all! Erm.. any ideas what lived in this gall? (if it is a gall?) Whatever they were they've gone now, but I'd be interested to know if anyone does know It was about 6-8cm big.

Judging by the spines, this is on a rose, in which case it may be caused by the cynipid wasp Diplolepis mayri, which is rare (the book says)

I haven't got a clue what it is, But it is really odd looking, has a sinister look about it while looking interesting at the same time.

Yes it was on a rose up in the woods, so I presume it's a wild rose of some sort. Ooo! Well that's very interesting, thanks for the info. I'll have too look into it a bit more I think I've got no idea how long it's been there tbh, could be months or years as it was pretty hard to the touch and did look somewhat weathered. Wonder what a freshly made one would look like?

Kymba - It certainly is very strange looking which is why I took a piccy! Thought the knowledgeable members on WAB would know all about it

Perhaps I should revisit where I found it to see if there are any more about?!?

It looks and old one - a recent one would be green, I think, and maybe not have the holes. The British PLant Gll Society would probably be interested

I think the common one on rose is the robbins pin cushion? im not sure what they look like once they have gone over liek this one?
or it may be a knopper gall? but im no expert.

Personally i think it looks like a really cute nest of tiny hedgehogs with big black eyes? who agrees?
