Flying Ants Day!

There are flyng ants everywhere! Here in Reading today, the humidity and climatic conditions generally have set off all the black ants in their nuptial flights.
Its certainly Flying Ants Day here in west Berkshire.
Anywhere else?

re: Flying Ants Day!

Just the right time - for several years in a row in my part of East London, they all flew on St Swithins Day - I forget when that is now - but I thought of inventing a proverb ....

No chance of them flying up here at the moment - swimming maybe

re: Flying Ants Day!

had 2 swarms in dorset last week, unknown access to my office at home by Lasius niger until i returned home from work to find the office full of males flying.Needless to say blocked the holes before the females flew.
also niger at work and the females were massive by comparison, on a side note iwe just built an ant farm for teaching at work this week with Myrmica ruginodis.

re: Flying Ants Day!

I havent seen them here in Vauxhall yet, but it seems the whole area is a giant anthill. Every year when they come out, millions appear from every crack in the pavement. With the weather being so clammy I`m sure they will be out here soon.

re: Flying Ants Day!

Large numbers on the wing in west London today (it's St. Swithin's today Paul!). For about third time this week many inside 2 of my windows, so have had to leave them open to liberate them.

The gulls, Swifts + Starlings have been having a bonanza!

I haven't seen them flying here yet, kind of freaks me out a bit when I'm stuck in the middle of them .

re: Flying Ants Day!

Had them here yesterday evening about 7pm, Why do they insist on landing on you?? are they attracted to humans or do they just not have a clue where they are going???
I have to admit I hate Flying Ants and stay indoors if i can ( with all windows shut) until they have all gone

I missed the explosion of ants, but my OH tells me they swarmed here (Sussex) on Sunday as well.

Yep we've had them here in Kent (Rochester and Dover). Seems this warm spell has brought them out.... Must be good for my feathered friends though

re: Flying Ants Day!

My daughter spotted one in the kitchen this morning. I caught it and returned it to the back garden on the window but then suddenly out shot a spider and that was the end of it, not one to miss an opportunity I rushed in for the camera and got a few shots before it dragged it's prey out of site .
