| | | Two Flies for ID I would appreciate any help in identifying these two flies please.
The first occurred in large numbers associated with Spear Thistle ( Cirsium vulgare) on calcareous grassland in the Buckinghamshire Chilterns in June. Is is Urophora stylata?
The second was photographed in Somerset in May. I thought Hoverfly at the time but then started wondering if it was a Soldier Fly?
Thanks for any help

| | | Re: Two Flies for ID Not sure about the first, the second I think is a hoverfly based on the wing veins, I think it might be a Dasysyrphus possibly pinastri but I could be very wrong |

| | | Re: Two Flies for ID Hi
the first looks like the Picture Wing Fly - Rhagoletis alternata.
The second looks like the Hoverfly - Dasysyrphus lunulatus.

| | | Re: Two Flies for ID The first pic looks like a Tephritid, and based on the wing pattern and the host plant I'm suggesting Urophora stylata
The second looks to be quite a big fly with hairy (blurry ?) eyes. The pale abdomen markings suggest it might not be Dasysyrphus, so I'm going for Scaeva pyrastri
