i was out and about yesterday and took these photo's of what i think is a high brown frittillary. the other possibility is that its a dark green but i don't think the spots are right for this? any help greatly appreciated as i have to list all butterflies i see at the site!

| | | Re: possible high brown frittillary - help please! i don't think its a small pearl bordered. this is the small pearl bordered as snapped at the same site. its got different markings, so the original pictures are either high brown or dark green. thanks for the help though.

I am pretty certain it's a Dark Green Fritillary.

I was concentrating on the bottom pic, which I still think is Dark Green. The top one I reckon is a High Brown!
I saw both species on the same day at Gait Barrows last year, but there were considerably more High Browns at the site.
They are notoriously tricky to separate without seeing their undersides and I won't be surprised if someone comes on and corrects me!

that's great if they are a high brown and a dark green. both of the species have been recorded at the site i'm surveying (quite near gate barrows and leighton moss) so i'll be happy with those!
