Do I understand right that everything in the Gallery has had a definite ID? Don't know if its the one I saw but pretty close.
Looking back to post 33 in this thread (Richard Mac), would you say his picture could also be also pimpla instigator? I dont think anyone came up with a definite answer. He (Rich Mac) said in post 34 it looked like rhyssa persuasoria, then someone else (post 37) suggested pimpla hypochondriaca or netelia testacea. I've looked at these 3 and only pimpla hyp. would fit.
I see there are other forums talking about similar insects. Will have a look at these. |

I've never in my life seen something like that, thats 26yrs...lol!
I live in North Yorkshire near the east coast. I'm in the countryside but not in the middle of nowhere. Its a sunny day and warm. Just so you had some background.
Someone please figure out what it is, i'm well intrigued! |
Hey Sparco, I think from your description it's got to be a Wood Wasp or Horntail (Urocerus gigas). Please don't swat them, they are quite harmless and thier lives are short enough as it is.... The stinger as you call it is actually an ovipositor which it drills into trees or logs and not humans... I put a picture in the Gallery... Though it may have ended up on Jupiter or Mars cos I can't seem to bring it up on this... If you can't bring it up either, cut and paste it on Google mate... Good luck and let me know if that is the one... |

It's an Ichneumon Wasp, some can be quite big but very few of the UK's 3,500 different species of them can be identified without microscopic examination by an expert!
Take care, Jason |
