Has anybody any experience of Hornets nests?
I've recently put up a Schwegler Bat box and upon checking it earlier this week found a Hornets nest at the top of it, obviously not what i intended to go in there  I took the front off in the hope that now being open it would discourage it from nesting it, but this didn't work and it's still in there tonight. Now i'm in a bit of a quandry what to do, i don't want to destroy the nest as Hornets are really quite peaceful creatures 
How big are Hornets nests? |

I think a Hornets nest is almost similar in size to a wasps nest, so from about football size and larger.

I think Hornet's nests will be limited by the space they have. It'll fill your Schwegler, but
I doubt it'll overflow it.

henrya | That's what i'm thinking, i'm going to put the front back on tomorrow evening i reckon and leave them to it. It should hopefully be a small nest then  |

I have seen them before in schwegler boxes they seem to have the highest
occupancy rate of any box for birds, Bats, and Hornets
Most nests had been abandoned half built (about the size of a large Lemon)
but I have seen them twice that size

Took a picture this evening before i put the front back on was hanging over the water and couldn't get the actual Hornet in the pic, but it's still there!  |

Had the nest ID'd by Alan today and it's definatly a Hornet and later found a dead Queen on a path in a different wood | | | |
