It's a froghopper I believe, Cercopis vulnerata.

Yes ... this is UK's largest and most distinctive hopper although in France there are a couple of similar looking species which can be a pest on plantations. C. vulnerata is only observed for a very brief period - perhaps four weeks during May-June - and it is a bit of a mystery. It is said to live on tree roots, particularly ash but we find it far away from trees, let alone ash ... So records of it are always useful. Can be entered on the Essex Field Club site (wherever you find it!) ...... A new froghopper survey

Saw several of these lovely bugs at Fingrinhoe Wick just over a week back- all on low herbage/bramble.

I had around 30 of the Black&Red Froghoppers at Lathkill Dale, Derbyshire on Sun 20th May. There were a few pairs bonking away as well. Pics to be uploaded soon

So is this what my froghopper nymph will turn into? There is loads of cuckoo spit in the garden at the mo'. I can honestly say I have never seen any Froghoppers the garden before and I could hardly have missed something so bright.
When I checked Froghopper out when I got this ID, I came up with Philaenus spurmarus, whats the difference please?

There are lots of froghoppers as well as the similar leaf hoppers and tree hoppers. Your cuckoo-spit one is unlikely to be Cercopis because the nymph of that lives on roots, rather than foliage.
