I am fairly sure these are crane flies, but I am not sure exactly which. I can't seem to find exact matches in my book or on the Internet.
Can anyone help?

Think we need a serious crane-fly book for this. Apparently there are about 300 species of them in the British Isles!

Marvelous craneflies.
The top one is the RDB (Vulnerable) cranefly Tanyptera atrata (a female). They do have a reasonably varied but vivid colouration. The one below it is another Tipula species but can't quite put my finger on it yet.

I think the second species is Tipula vernalis, a common species of grassland at this time of year. |

WW I would not say a biiig book more like a collection of lots of paper arranged in such a way as to look useful.
