Thanks for the 'belated' comment, Paul - I'll apologise now for this extremely belated comment too (I haven't logged in much recently and I have only just seen your post...been busy Runescaping lol)

The aphid is as you say more likely to be related to conifers as our back garden has conifers as hedging on 3 sides (and no willows by the way)
