Talking Greetings from Leafy Essex

Hi All
I'm a new member, just registered yesterday after looking through the WAB site. What a great project, StuartDH, and thank you for your efforts at starting such a website.
I'm 41, and a teacher so, as everyone knows, I've lots of holidays to go wandering about Britain taking in the sights; sometimes on foot over hills and mountains, around the coast by yacht, or in a kayak down some of our wilder rivers.
I've just moved from an urban sprawl in south Essex and have rediscovered the joys of living in countryside (I grew up in farmland in mid-essex).
I'm looking forward to taking part in the forums and maybe adding to the gallery.

Cheers Everyone

Tugboat
(a nickname given to me as my first kayak was a bit of a tub)

Re: Greetings from Leafy Essex

Hello Tim the teacher from Essex.Welcome to WAB! We are neighbours-well Kent. Just a little stream between our two counties.Richew may be on later, he's an Essex guy and we like pulling each others legs about our counties. We're mates really though.
I'm Julie (jules) from North Kent, a TA in a school and a part time field teacher-so I don't get those lovely hols quite so much now.

It's nice to meet you. Looking forward to your posts.
Jules

BTW-please don't grade our spellings or grammar-sometimes we're fairly phonetic!!

Excellent-I like you already. Nice one Design Tech! We can pick your designers brain
A field teacher-well my job, mainly with children is literally all sorts of teaching, in the field eg pond dipping, insect sweeps, birds(basic stuff as I'm still learning loads myself) invertebrates etc and outreach to schools in shows etc and resources for school field days. So fun stuff for me really. TA-from sick bucket holder to teaching children with high level educational needs. In my spare time a dedicated WABbite-count my posts!! Oh and a Mum and wife-nearly forgot!

Pond Dipping and insect sweeping; Great. And you get paid for that?
My kids and I spent endless summer afternoons falling into ponds whilst dipping and making pooters to look at bugs. My partner thinks I'm a bit weird but I'm converting her and her townie ways

Hello Tim

Welcome to WAB.

Julie said I would be along soon .... it took a bit longer than I expected as I have only just got in from work .

It is good to see another Essex WABer here. We do need to keep those other folk across the river in check .

Which part of leafy Essex do you live in?

Richard

Hi Richard,
Just moved to Hockley. Although I'm on the 12th floor of a building in Euston Road right now. Not much wildlife to look at but the view is amazing. The London Eye was lit up in bright fucia last night.
Thank you to everyone else who has replied to me, what a friendly bunch you all are

I don't know whether you are aware but Hockley Woods is currently producing reasonably regular sightings of Lesser Spotted Woodpecker and Hawfinch . I have seen them both but unfortunately they are both camera shy!

More information here .... South Essex RSPB.

Hi Richard
I was wandering the woods a week or 2 ago and met a couple of fellas huddling around a scope on a tripod and they told me there was a Hawfinch around; it was just below the childrens playground; wasn't you was it?
I did spend an hour or two chasing the knocking sound of the woodpecker with my camera in hand but got bored then distracted by a pair of treecreepers sweeping the standard oaks in a recently cleared area.
I had more luck with lesser spotted woodpeckers in the woods to the north side of Hockley; they were still a bit shy, though.
I'm quite new to wildlife photography so perhaps I need to get something straight; is it the difficulty of our subject that makes the chase such fun
All the best
Tim

No Tim, I don't think it was me! When I was there I was part of a group of some 20 birders.

I think the difficulty of our subject makes it frustrating, rewarding .... and of course fun .... and sometimes all three in one day!

Richard

Re: Greetings from Leafy Essex

A welcome to all people from Essex. I hope you're familiar with the Essex Field Club Essex Field Club and can share your experiences with others. I'm a bit worried that moving from the 'urban sprawl' into 'farmland' might be rather like the frying pan and the fire - certainly the great big patches of species paucity in Essex are the arable farmlands! Hope you've got organic farming near you!
Looking forward to your contributions,
Cheers, Paul

Hi Paul
Hadn't heard of the Essex Field Club but just gave it a quick look. I'll be checking all the local lavendar bushes for Rosemary Beetles. What time of year would one expect it to be around?

Re: Greetings from Leafy Essex

The last time I checked, it hadn't been seen in North Essex - and not much in S. Essex compared to the numbers in London and Norfolk - perhaps it's the wrong kind of lavender! The 'adults' are most numerous in May-July with a June peak but they have been found in every calender month .... the larvae are largest and most notable April-May.
Have fun!
