| | Hello from Sunny Cornwall Hi All,
My name is Steve and I reside on the Rame Penninsula. After many years of 'getting around to it' I finally purchased a Pentax K-x DSLR just before Christmas. I can't believe what I have been missing out on over all these years.
After hundreds of wasted shots I am finally starting to see some results as me and the 'Old Girl' continue to acquaint ourselves. She was purchased with two lenses - an 18-55 and a 50-200 which I primarily now use for blurred watershots. I recently splashed out on a 70-300 which seems to be working quite nicely.
It is my intention in the immediate near future to invest in a 150-500 lense because the 70-300 is not quite getting the bird shots I need. Around the Rame Penninsula Coast Kestrels and Buzzards are plentiful and just over the River Tamar, in Plymouth, are Plymbridge Woods which are filled with Woodpeckers, Nuthatches, Grey Wagtails, Dippers, Kestrels, Buzzards, Cormorants, Maderine Ducks not to mention the ptrotected Peregrine Falcon nest.
I would welcome any relevant advice on lenses investment up to £700. I look forward to expanding my current limited knowledge by sponging from the sites seasoned photographers.

Can't help on long lenses within that budget I'm afraid but I'm sure there'll be lots of others on here who can.
I'm spending a week on the Fal estuary this summer - any tips on good wildlife sites in that area?

| | | Re: Hello from Sunny Cornwall Hi Steve welcome to the Forum. I have just purchased the Sigma 170-500 zoom lens and am very happy with the results like all long zooms the pictures are a little soft but easily sharpened in software i.e. photo shop. I think you will find this lens not only suitable for your requirements but also within your price range hope this is of use.
Look forward to seeing some photos.

| | | Re: Hello from Sunny Cornwall Hey thanks for the reply, Bobby. Where did you get your lense and what was the approximate cost? I visited Jessops in Plymouth on Friday and was advised to start off with a x2 converter first to double up the 70-300 - your thoughts?

It's a personal choice but I've never been happy with converters. I got my lens from Cornwall Cameras in Truro. They not only deal in all the new equipment - they have an excellent secondhand side too - which is the route I went down.
The Sigma 170-500 Zoom lens is between £650 - £700 new (depending on where you shop) but I picked it up for what I thought was a very reasonable £400.
They have stores in Truro and St. Austell if these are near enough for you (I see you are also in Cornwall) and are also on the internet. http://www.cornwallcameras.co.uk/
Hope you find what you are looking for.
