| | | Growth on rotten tree - mystery Ten days ago there were two 'dollops of mashed potato' on a rotten trunk in my garden. A few days later they had merged into one 'body', grey in colour and smooth to the touch. Now the whole thing has turned chocolate brown and is loose and fluffy! A slight blow on it and the 'cocoa powder' flies away. It is detaching slightly along one edge. Photo is available of the smooth stage; now taking picture of the chocolate one.
FASCINATING! The thing is about 2.5 inches in length; width about a third of that. |

| | | Re: Growth on rotten tree - mystery Thanks, Meta Menadi! I've googled slime mould and am amazed at the variety of them. One of the images I found is of White Slime Mould, which looks exactly like (one of) the dollops of 'mashed potato'! I shall watch now with ever more interest, and my friend at the Wildlife Trust (who has yet to respond to my email) will be fascinated. |

Sounds very much like Enteridium lycoperdon, a slime mould.
