| | | Re: wood splitting I use a 'Screwfix' wood grenade. It works fine, but beware of using it on tough wood with side branches. I whacked mine flush into a holly log without it splitting and it took me weeks of periodically attacking it to get it out!
I've also got a maul for log splitting and driving the grenade in: Roughneck Splitting Maul 8Lb - Screwfix.com, Where the Trade Buys
You really feel invincible with it in your hands!

| | | Re: wood splitting A maul is a cross between a sledgehammer and an axe. They're very satisfying to use, though at 8lb sapping to use if you're unfit (like me, currently!)

Originally Posted by tom00_uk not tried one of these, do they help? i just use a long handle axe or if the woods very hard resort to a chain saw | Hey pal.. I think it all comes with time, experience and knowledge of wood... I am not an expert but I think the golden rules are, dont burn fresh wood, only burn old and seasoned wood, seasoned depending on the type of wood(1 to 2 years) and it has to be as dry as possible to maximise heat and to minimise damage or fire risk to the flue/ chimney. Word of warning... hard woods will seriously put strain on your chain saw, so make sure that you seek professional advice cos safety is, well, a little important... |

Jim | Tell you this much Jim, I can't believe how well the grenade works on logs and trunk 'discs'. Must be the best 10 quid I have spent in terms of saving time and energy... But I wish I had got an 8lb sledgehammer instead 10lb..!
