We could start with a half barrel pond and a birch in a tub

| | Thanks Thank you to everyone who welcomed me, it was really nice and I can't believe how happy I was just to see the messages!
Yes to Goosey, it is me so you don't look stupid ( I bet that's a relief).
Also, thank you to nightshade for your interest, my yard is roughly 13ft x 6ft (I've just been out to measure it and nearly got blown away!) I would really like to encourage butterflies as I don't see many here throughout the summer at all. I also hardly get any sun, just in the mornings till about 10am. I am looking for something quite simple but cheerful.
Thanks

| | | Re: Hello Hi Monkster, also Goosey, and Carp-Angler.
If you can, I suggest you paint any walls or fences with exterior white paint, as that will increase reflectivity.
I had a garden like that before this one, and I made ponds and boggy area with use of buried polythene sheet in holes, (used an old sink once before and soon had frogs and caddis fly), and I planted hart's tongue ferns, cuckoo pints, aspedistra and sweet woodruff, as well as soap wort and buddlia for the butterflies. Water mint in the ponds grew well, as did cyperus or umbrella plant which grew to a spectacular seven feet high. Campanula grew in wall crevices well.
