I must say tho your opening post struck a chord and took me straight back to when I was 17 and decided I would buy some binocs and books and get myself outside as much as I could - I can't say I ever minded being on my own - I've always been quite happy by myself - its only in my fifties that I've got 'friendlier' and looked for company.

Like Wizzo says - I would love to be 19 again and have all the fresh discovery in front of me - don't get me wrong - I'm still learning all the time - but I do look back with envy at myself when I remember my first 'this' or 'that' some of my firsts - whether species or experiences were so monumental.

Looking forward to reading your posts and 'listening' to what you see

Hi Lindsey, a warm welcome to WAB.
I well remember when I was your age, out with my mates, doing the things lads do. Except I always had one eye on the birds in the hedgerow or the flowers on the bank beneath. Although I'm sure they thought me a bit odd, they never 'ribbed' me about it.
But I soon found like-minded people, (as you have now done), which made it all the more fun.
I know that you will find us all 'very normal'; most of the time!

I've also enjoyed reading that I'm not the only one who at this age had a love for wildlife. When I was little I had lots of friends who were into nature/wildlife and remember helping a friend to collect ants for his ant farm but thats enquisitive children for you and most of them tend to grow out of it and its nice to know I'm not the only one who didn't !

Just spotted your post and wanted to offer a belated welcome. I felt lost too until I came here. I have lovely friends, in real life, but none share my love of land and sea invertebrates. It's been great finding like minds here, and I know you'll feel right at home in no time

When I was your age I was in the miltary, for some unknown reason? Any way, I was known as the geek or the anorak, why everyone else was getting very drunk, rowdy and fighting in the NAAFI's, I was the guy on his own out bird watching. Talk about sticking out like a sore thumb, but who cares, I enjoy my wildlife too much to care what my peers where saying about me (taking the mickey really).

Yep, you're definitely amongst good company, enjoy the site and if you ever need to borrow an anorak...........................

Yes this is a nice site indeed.
I have found likeminded people too, especially about wildlife gardening.
I have a small garden about 32 m2.
In that garden i have 46 different species of plants so i guess im a bit exccentric...
