Has anyone else noticed the simply huge amount of wildlife in Coventry?

This place is a concrete jungle, and yet we still see muntjac running across the road......

really surprising..

Re: Wildlife in Coventry

Hi LLanon99
We all think the grass is greener on the other side, but we don't do that badly here in Coventry (Midlands).
It only takes a few minutes and we are out in the countryside

I grew up there. Lots of wildlife when I was a kid. I last saw Coventry from the Stoneleigh side of the A45, and I didn't want to cross the roundabout and go back!

It's nice to know the wildlife is doing so well.

Re: Wildlife in Coventry

My wife and I recently moved here form Scotland after spending a year there, previous to that we were in Mid-Wales for 10 years, and it is surprising how much we see here......

Much better than we expected, although there tends to be "hot spots"..

we mainly go to Brandon Marsh, and to Warwick University grounds, where my wife works..

lots of birds, some of which we seldom saw in Wales.

Where were you in Mid-Wales? Don't you miss the Red Kites?

I remember birding in Brandon Marshes, and presume the birds you didn't see in Wales were waders. Please tell me!

Hello,
We lived in the general area of Aberystwyth, Llanon actually 12 miles south of Aber......

and yes the wonderful Brandon Marsh is pretty much where we see lots of waders, and yes again they ar ethe ones we tended not to see in Aber :-)

The red kites we miss a lot as we used to see them maybe 50 at a time hovering around like vultures..........

some of our Brandon Marsh images are at the following address if you are interested....

Sorry, the link didn't work.

I saw a lot of birds for the first time at Brandon. However the area was shot. I remember a wildfowler thinking he had the area to himself and being livid when he found an organised group of birders there. He shot two birds in our presence, and one was only wounded, which concerned me.

I bet you do miss those kites? What brought you to Coventry?

And (is this OT?) I learned from the news today that Coventry City Farm may have to close, and feel sad, because I was one of the original staff when it first opened. Kids in tower blocks NEED something like that!

Re: Wildlife in Coventry

try the link again, if you like, it works from my system, or you could type the address into your address bar directly (leave out the quote marks"")..

We hear the odd shots when we are in Brandon Marsh, but haven't seen anyone other than fishermen form the angling club, and lots of golfers on the adjacent course.....

Maybe things have calmed down there a bit nowadays we have only been going there since we moved here last summer.

Sad about the farm isn't it.... don't really know anything other than what we have seen on the news..

we came here for work, my wife is, unfortunately a career gypsy at the moment, being educated is not always easy *LOL*

Re: Wildlife in Coventry

Hi

I can see that you have to go where the work is, and there is not a lot in the countryside. I can live in lovely countryside because I’ve had the magic birthday!

I bet that after leaving a lovely place like Aberystwyth, you were delighted to find so much wildlife! I guess you are in Coventry for the foreseeable future. Which part of town?

I come close to Coventry once a year, because I never miss the Royal Show.

I rang up the chairman of the City Farm, who remembers me, and says that the situation isn't quite that bad. It costs about 7,500 a month to run the farm. I just hope they can find it! I think about kids in tower blocks with nowhere to play and no access to countryside.

I grew up in Styvechale, and until I was 11 there were only four houses in a road with meadows and a spinney at the back of it. I remember cuckoos, grasshoppers, blue butterflies and all sorts of other wildlife. I am sure the cuckoos and grasshoppers are gone. However I was luckier than kids in Hillfields will be without the farm! The meadows disappeared under bricks and mortar when I was 11, but I knew by then that I would live inthe countryside if I ever got the chance.

I left Coventry 20 years ago this coming September, and the City Farm manager is the same person after all those years.
