| | | New member says hello! Hello everyone! I've just found this site and, after a quick look, I just knew I had to become a member!
I'm Gill, 38, married to Neil and we live in Northumberland.
I've been obsessed with animals from an extremely young age and even as a young girl I would collect caterpillars in jars and watch them develop into moths & butterflies before releasing them. I always had an aquarium on the go and every Spring it would contain either tadpoles or sticklebacks. Sadly I haven't had one for a number of years now but am planning to set one up in 2007 *don't know if i've informed Neil of this fact yet LOL*
I'm a keen birder/naturalist and never happier than when I'm outdoors and am just as happy to wile away the hours observing a common bird as I am a rare one I've started sketching too and find that this has increased my observation and made me really look at things more - how things are put together, the colours and shades and the kinds of habitat they live in etc.
I couldn't bear the thought of living my life without Nature and can't understand folks who have no interest in it....what on earth do they DO with themselves all day? I try to spread the message to customers who come into the shop I work in and get them interested too - I've already converted Neil! None of my workmates are interested though - but thankfully I have the internet so can 'talk' to other wildlife enthusiasts and get my fix that way!
Look forward to being a member of this site and getting to know you all

You know how curious people get if you screen them off from what you are doing I find that works, I am now fed info by allsorts of people including people who are not interested themselves
I do add www.wildaboutbritain to any e-mails I send so the recipient can please themselves

| | | Re: New member says hello! Thanks *rather belatedly I must admit!!!* for the wonderful welcome
I haven't been online much these past few months due to a number of things but am now back and raring to go LOL
Neil was fine about the idea of an aquarium and was VERY interested in seeing tadpoles turn into froglets (he's never seen that happen before ) but as it turned out I didn't get the chance to set my tank up as we thought we may be moving to Cumbria in Spring 2007 so I decided to wait until I was somewhere more settled.
Unfortunately THAT fell through - or, rather, has been put back until Spring 2008 and by that time I'd missed both frogs/toads and stickleback's breeding cycles. Oh well, perhaps 2009 will be my year
I've still been getting out and about as much as my silly job will allow me (I work six days a week grrr) and have had some memorable wildlife encounters this year - including showing Neil hundreds of microscopic froglets that had just emerged from a pond at Wallington Hall. He was absolutely entranced and declared he'd never known frogs could BE so small!
He also mentioned last week, whilst we were watching a Tanya Streeter programme, that he'd never seen a wild dolphin before so I've promised to show him one....somehow! Tomorrow *Thursday 16th* is my day off so, weather permitting, we are going to go out on one of Billy Shiel's boats for a one & half hour cruise around the Farne Islands. We should see LOTS of Grey Seals and hopefully some good seabirds such as Shearwaters and Storm Petrels (they would both be new to me too) and, if we are REALLY lucky there's always the chance of dolphins, porpoises and the occasional Minke Whale Fingers crossed!
Anyway, off to peruse the rest of the site.....I've go a lot to catch up on |

It'll be great to hear how you got on with the boat trip - any luck with the dolphins & whales?
All the best,
