Hello everyone, I'm Alison. I'm new to the Internet, so go easy with me! I have always loved birds and animals. Unfortunately, I now have more time on my hands than in the past, but I want to use that time to further my interest in bird watching and share my experiences with like minded people. In my career I care for the mentally ill, which is rewarding, but tiring. I am hoping bird watching can provide a relaxing relief from the toils of day to day life.
Any tips on bird watching (best gear, equipment, etc) and finding good resources on the "net" would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for all the replies. I am from Cumbria, so lots of countryside around, which is perfect for my new pasttime. I have been busy looking around the site, lots of great information! Tomorrow is my first full day of bird watching. I also plan to find as many other animals as I can. I'm very excited. If I come up with anything interesting, I'll post a link to it. Is that okay? I'm sure that birdwatching can give you a real opportunity to rest and unwind from the toils of daily life. Sometimes it's just great to find a spot and sit/stand/lie down quietly and wait to see what comes along... as long as you don't nod off 
You'll probably find a pair of binoculars invaluable and even a decent spotting scope. And a good bird book always comes in useful for sorting out exactly what it is that you've seen. There's threads on the best of these, but as far as books go, I reckon you won't go wrong with the Collins Bird Guide. Enjoy
Oh, and if you ever get stuck with identifying birds, pop a question in the Birds Forum. And feel free to upload any photos too, if you're into that. | | |
