| | | hi from branston identification help hi i live in branston lincolnshire i was walking my dogs in the winter and i heard a peculier sound it sounded like a metal detector i looked for people and saw nothing. Anyway i was walking my dogs today and isaw the birds making this sound from a distance they look like seagulls. When i got closer i saw three black and white birds circling round one area the tips of the wings were either black or white i cant remember. They were flying above my head and the only sound i can describe is a large dog toy been squeezed then released quite low pitch.I then came home and have searched everywhere on the internet and found nothing that sounds like them its really bugging me now because they have such an unusual call if anyone knows what these are please let me know thankyou |

| | | Re: hi from branston identification help Did you notice the shape and colour of the beak? Black and white with a distinctive call, could be either a Lapwing or an Oystercatcher. If you look on the RSPB website, there is a menu bar along the top, hover over "Birds & Wildlife", then click on "Birds by name". On the next screen you get all the species of bird beginning with "A", with links to the rest of the alphabet.
Once you look at each individual species, there is a recording of the songs and/or calls that they make, which should help you identify it.

| | | Re: hi from branston identification help Squeezed and released? A two note sound? That'd be a good description of the call of a peewit or green plover I should think. Oh, as Earthdragon said, lapwing is another name. We also call them Old maids! Anyone knw another bird with so many names?

| | | Re: hi from branston identification help Welcome to WAB! I agree with the suggestions that what you saw and heard were Lapwings (also known as Peewits or Green Plovers), which have a very distinctive call. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
