black flies
Hi there have just joined the forum in order to see if you can help identify black flies which are along the edge of an arable field. Noticed them 3 days ago have 'droopy bits' hanging down. Any ideas?

Those will be St Mark's Flies. They're very distinctive and around at the moment.

The droopy bits are legs.

Hi there
Thanks for the info, they are still around, just come back from dog walking. Can you tell me how long St Mark's flies live for, they aren't very pleasant are they? They seem to prefer the open air to the woods which border the field which is good for me and my dog. Any info on these flies would be appreciated.

Oh thanks Susie. I was meaning to get a picture of them and post it in. I don't think I have ever seen so many around. Do you know what the larvae are like?
