| | | Hello from the Yorkshire Dales Another new member - lucky enough to both live and work at Malham Tarn but spend a lot of time on various Scottish Islands. Just come back from a week watching geese, Otters and eagles on Islay. |

I feel quite privileged to be up here. It's an ideal place for someone interested in the natural world to live. I'll get round to posting some photos of the wildlife around here when I get used to how the system works. In the meantime if anyone wants any info about the area let me know. |

A belated welcome to WAB from me too.
Yorkshire Dales and the Scottish islands? .... it doesn't come much better than that!
Sounds like a great trip to Islay which is still one of the islands that I have yet to visit.

I teach at a field studies centre so spend a lot of time out and about in the Dales trying to enthuse people about the wildlife, landscape, history, geology etc of this area.
Islay is just my favourite place to be in late October - if you ever get to either let me know and I can suggest a few places to go.

Richard | Cheers Richard - I reckon I've got it good too.
Islay in autumn is superb. We saw 109 species of bird including 2 species of eagle and approx. 50000 geese, Otters, common and Grey Seals, Porpoise, bottlenose dolphin and eight distilleries!

Next year me and the family are off to Wester Ross so I'm kind of planning nice places to go and walks for the dog etc. Also I have heard on Islay that the RSPB reserve at Loch Gruinart is an excellent place for wildlife. I take it you have been there Rob?

I take it you have been there Rob? | Loch Gruinart is lovely and full of wildlife - go anytime between mid-October and mid-March and you'll be sharing it with 30,000 geese mind you. Two photos here to whet your appetite. The first is the flooded areas on the reserve itself and the second a general view over the loch as the sun was going down - wish I was there right now.
