| | Hello all and help Firstly hello to one and all
as a garden virgin ( we lived in a flat for 17 years ) our new council home had trees at the back of our house ( 10 in all ), the trees were around 20 feet high and i beleive they were ferns, the local council granted planning to a company who have knocked down 4 houses and taken down all the trees.
sad as it sounds, the trees were lovely and now all we have is a 12ft fence which looks terrible without the trees
any ideas what i can plant again and what actual trees to plant
excuse my ignorance on the garden matters, but to say we are gutted is an understatement
even the cats are depressed |

| | | Re: Hello all and help Hiya Scar and welcome to WAB. Shame about the trees You have to be carefull what you plant in terms of conifers etc. However, if you don't have anybody overlooking you at the rear, you could try some quick growing evergreens. They are cheap to buy (2-3 quid) and grow amazingly quickly. As Mr Mack says though, if you have the patience, go for some nice large shrubs or fruit trees. They will feed you and keep the locals happy! please let us know what you decide. Wizzo |

| | | Re: Hello all and help hi Scar, sorry they got rid of the trees, we had a similar thing here, many trees went, i felt sorry for the wildlife.
what about trees or bushes that attract birds, that contain food for them.
like berries,seeds/nuts.
i dont know bout gardens either.
but you could probably get answers on the net about what to plant searching google.
wish you luck |

Some good suggestions here regarding what to plant!
Maybe you could copy your post and put it in the wildlife gardening section of the forum too.

| | | Re: Hello all and help Fruit trees every time. Apple, pear, damson, morello cherry. It is swings and roundabouts. My Son has a house within sight of the Severn, just upriver of the old bridge, or he would have if it wasn't for a bank of the dreaded leylandii! Cheers, Tony. |

| | Re: Hello all and help Good idea Tracey. only suggestion I've got, (although they won't grow as high as the original trees) is Buddliah, which will definitely attract butterflies and other interesting things, and other bushes and trees that will attract wildlife, as Squeek said. You could also mask the fence with some climbers and creepers, which will also make a habitat for wildlife, and hang some bird nesting boxes on the fence, well before spring so the birds get used to them, and have the pleasure of birds nesting in them, as well as helping the birds. Then you could also get a HEDGEHOG box, but make sure there is a way in and out of your garden for the hedgehogs, only a small hole just big enough, so you don't get all the neighbourhood dogs.HEDGEHOGGY would advise you properly on this. You were understandably gutted when the trees disappeared, but my guess is that they were leylandii, which would have grown up and up and up, shielding your garden from the sun, so look on the brightside and enjoy the adventure of planning your new garden.Good Luck with the venture and Keep Us Posted, please..Posie... I've just seen the last post...Leylandii ! !

| | | Re: Hello all and help Whilst you are waiting for trees to grow back, whatever you plant, ivy will look after itself, give shelter to all sorts and provide late year feed for a wide variety of insects.
Oh, and welcome.

If you want some trees, it was mentioned on Autumnwatch that some trees are being given away free. Try here. BBC - Breathing Places - Tree O'Clock |

| | Re: Hello all and help And, if you want to do the IVY idea, you can get plenty of wild ivy from 'out and about' it takes very easily, and I bet there's loads quite close to you.Just pull some pieces of root out of the ground, plant them down your garden, against your fence and you will be surprised how it grows and spreads. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
