You can drive right up to Sumburgh Head RSPB reserve, where you can see puffins, guillemots, shags, fulmars, great skuas and more at close quarters. Very close with the puffins!  There is an excellent boat trip to Noss where you get fantastic views (and smells  ) of gannet and guillemot colonies.
There's a very good chance of seeing otters at a couple of the inter-island ferry terminals.

Would love to see killer whales - I took the ferry from Bar Harbour Maine to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia and back, a famous whale watching route in the hope of seeing them, both times it was so foggy it was a miracle we sailed. That's a risk you take out there, foggiest place on the planet. |
