| | | Hello from Fife - can you help identify this? Hi there,
I'm new to this site and live just outside Dunfermline in Fife. The other day whilst I was collecting eggs from my chickens I found a strange egg in their nest box and I wondered if anyone could help identify it.
Its just under 3cm in length and only 1cm in diameter, very dark brown in colour but speckled even darker! At first I thought it was a nut but it IS an egg!
I couldn't help laughing at the fact that it was in my chickens' nest box. Does anyone have any idea? By the way, I'm surrounded by woodland and farmland if that helps and we regularly hear owls and buzzards sit in our trees. We have approx 8 house martin nests on the property plus daily visits from all the usual suspects. (Doing my 'nature count' was fun this year!) Thought this info might help.
Thanks,
Sandra |

| | | Re: Hello from Fife - can you help identify this? The only bird I can think of would be a Cuckoo, which doesn't build a nest but just lays it's egg in other bird's nests for the parents to raise.
A warm welcome to WAB too.

Have you any that are laying for the first time?
Sometimes the first or second egg a chicken lays can be very small, thin shelled or much darker in colour.
Have you got a picture you can show us? |
