Hello and caterpillar ID

Hi all,

What a wonderful site! I can predict yet more dispacement activities on my horizon when I should really be working on my dissertation.

As I'm here, could anyone shed any light as to what this hairy fellow is? We found it yesterday crawling on the harness of a strimmer whilst we were mowing and raking an ancient moat near Flitwick, Bedfordshire.

Cheers

Lisa

Re: Hello and caterpillar ID

Looks rather like a Buff Tip Moth caterpillar to me. They often feed in groups on plants such as Sallow, Birch, etc. Welcome to forum.

Hi and thank you,

I did wonder whether it was a Buff Tip, closest by far. All the other photos and illustrations I've found in my field guides seem to show much more yellow but you can always count on the natural world to provide a huge variety of colour variations within a species <grins>.

Cheers

Lisa
