I've just opened this new forum category to enable all members to say hello and tell everyone a bit about themselves. To start the ball rolling here's a bit about me.
I'm in my early thirties and work as an energy and environment consultant throughout the UK, advising companies on increasing energy efficiency and reducing their impact on the climate.
I started Wild About Britain as a charity about 18 months ago, as a way to help promote every aspect of British wildlife throughout all of the UK. Essentially, there were several main reasons for getting the project off the ground.
Firstly, I felt that during the last few decades, younger generations have been losing touch with their natural environment. Many young people are unable to confidently identify a dozen trees, birds, insects, mammals etc - and I admit that I had to include myself in that group.
Secondly, I felt that whilst many people were aware of the large UK wildlife charities, few people knew about the army of volunteers that were doing vitally important work in their own local area, as part of small conservation and wildlife interest groups.
Thirdly, I wanted to create a place where everyone could find a wide variety of information about British wildlife, without having to be restricted to single specialist subject or a limited area of geography. A place where they could find information about birds and butterflies in Cornwall, alongside fungi and sharks in Scotland.
Lastly, I wanted to create a place that belongs to everyone involved. I want Wild About Britain to be a community project that will be shaped by the ideas and suggestions of the forum members, gallery photographers, authors and editors that help to build this site.
Thankfully, there are lots of volunteers, many of whom you'll meet in these forums, who share the same ambitions. With their invaluable help, I'm proud to say that we are making a great contribution to British wildlife. wildaboutbritain.co.uk is now growing at a rate and quality that has far exceeded initial expectations and is a superb place to meet some great new friends from across the UK. 
We hope you enjoy being here. We're a friendly bunch with a wide range of interests and unlike some other places on the net, we have a very low geek-factor 
As a result, we're always keen to welcome new visitors and no question should be considered too embarassing, basic or obvious to ask. Feel free to start your own threads on any subject related to British wildlife, or start a new thread here to introduce yourself.

To start a new post, simply click on the title of the relevant category in the forum's homepage - http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/forums - and click on the 'New thread' button at the top of the screen.

What a great idea Stu - and thanks for such a fantastic web site - I've never felt so 'at home' as I do among the folk on here - its only taken 50+ years to find others like myself - its very gratifying I can tell you! Now you'll excuse me while I just go out back and play (very seriously) at being a 'mothing geek' . . . the mercury burneth bright and may attract some beautiful little (or big) moth that wants its picture taking. . . |

Stuart.
As a novice on computers and the way things work, I have got to grips with most of the site but there is still so much to get involved in and learn. Most importantly the site has made room for novices like myself to grow and not feel out of place as you have said, do not feel embarrassed to ask or inhibited. WAB has done alot for my confidence as it has and will do for many other armatures (in what ever field they represent) because of the freedom and vast variety it encompasses.

Hello stuart and everyone!
This is my first post, and have to say that it seems like a lovely welcoming place to be, I've joined because of some of the beautiful images that i've seen on here, and i think it will be a good tool to show some british wildlife to my 6 yr old son, so that he appreciates where and how things live. also possibly to get some ideas tips for holidays to see the local wildlife, as he loves tramping through forests and things!!

Thanks and what a pleasure it is to say that. I have only been on the WAB forum for 3 days but already feel part of something bright and positive. Everyone on the WAB has been hugely friendly and helpful and the wealth of knowledge and wisdom out there is stunning. I really feel that thoes ID problems and questions I has (about dull stuff like which species of willow is it) may finally be answered!
So I hope you know that you have made a difference. Many people strive to do that all their lives, You have done it.

How about a category for folk to record there walks,places visted,wildlife seen,best pubs on route! A sort of online diary etc.[I hate the word Blogg!]
