| | | Re: Hello from StuartDH Hello all - recently moved to a rural-ish location and desperately trying to increase my knowledge of all the brown moving stuff and the green not-moving stuff outside my window. I live in Warwickshire on the edge of the Cotswolds (Shipston-on-Stour - yes, the place that's been in the news lately about the traveller camp) and have a regular 'patrol' route I'm lucky enought o be able to walk most days, so I'm training myself to notice the differences that gradually emerge through the year.
Looking forward to learning more from others here... |

| | | Re: Hello from StuartDH Hello All,
I found this site a few days ago and finally thought I'd join and send a post.
I've become a little obsessed (my partner seems to think so) with feeding the birds. I've done it sporadically over the years but I have a terrible problem with squirrels who managed to eat all the seed & nuts and break all the feeders. I lost patience buying all sorts of deterrents for the squirrels only to figure out how to dismantle or throw them to the ground.
However, I've discovered the squirrels don't enter my front garden and since have attraced robins with some fat balls, tits with nuts and I did attract finches & siskins with the seed feeder. However, none of the birds seem to be eating the new seed I bought. I think the previous brand was something mixed from Gardman and they were going crazy for the stuff - I was getting through a feeders worth every other day and I was getting the very lovelyGoldfinches. Now I've changed to local supermarket's mixed seed and they are ignoring it. So I did some googling and bought some nyger seed and a special feeder and they ignored that. Now I've bought another fancy feeder and filled half and half with the mixed seed and nyger seed. They still don't seem to be paying any attention all the finches are interested in is the nuts and my goldfinches have disappeared. As a result I have kilos and kilos of seed and about 7 different feeders - slightly obsessed!
What am I doing wrong? Or are they busy else where? I suppose the weather is warmer...
As for the squirrels my neighbour and my family are currently testing squirrel cafes - I bought a batch of them. So far no results to report - they are still attacking the feeders including the squirrel proof ones. We're yet to fork out £60 for the ones that have the weight activated shutters.
When I'm not obsessing about my birds getting a varied diet I'm a marketing manager for an electronic security company. I also work from home a lot and my office window is perhaps 4ft from the tree where I have my feeders so I can watch them all day and I've become very attached.
Hello to you all. Fantastic site and I didn't feel too ignorant to join in! I'm very much a beginner.
Regards,

I registered with this site only yesterday and I am still only finding my way round. There is so much to do and look at...brilliant site....very informative.
I have spent most of my time uploading some of my photographs and then I had a go at trying to identify some of the Unidentified Wildflowers...loving it... ( I hope I got it right...). With this little message I would also like to take the opportunity to say 'HELLO' to everyone. I look forward to exchanging pictures, facts and information with existing members.
Have a very nice day everyone.
Kind regards, Maria |

In response to Merlin earlier in the thread
quote Stu,
How about a category for folk to record there walks, places visted, wildlife seen, best pubs on route! A sort of online diary etc.[I hate the word Blogg!] quote
Sounds like a great idea as often the official tour type guides are misleading a area where we could all give our own accounts of our adventures sightings work etc would be very useful

Feedergirl | I have been using a steel tree type thing (vertical post with arms that come off it at the top to hang things on) for my feeders from my local garden centre for £10 and this has the squirrels totally stumped |

I love the site, thanks for taking the time to set it up, I find the image upload procedure confusing though!!
I'm new (joined today), I am living for the time being in France and hope that doesnt exclude me. I am a police officer currently on a career break. I am a "towny" and agree with your comments about the generations loosing touch. So at 40 something I'm on catch up and enjoying it.
Thanks again - great site

| | Re: Hello from Kathy hi there
I am quite newish here so I thought I would add to what Stuart has suggested and say a little more about myself
I am 50 years old, a professional in IT/Technical Drawing who is going though one or two operations for my hand and eye at the moment - nothing life threating as such - more of an inconvenience!
As a matter of fact I will be going for an operation tomorrow to fix a finger (I have dupruytrons Contracture)
I love wildlife, birds, butterflies, and I have always had this love form a very young age. I am very artistic and love reading. I love meeting people and enjoy a good old chat about everything.
All of my family are artistic, and we have liked wildlife all or lives, so it is all the families blood.
A great love for horses is part of my life too (I see that there is a pony thread on this site)
I live with my partner who is 54 years old in Bedford and he works in the Utility market, and enjoys his job a lot.
Hobby wise I love walking, bird watching, looking at wild Flowers ans observing what is all aroumfd me on a daily basis.
We live quite close to the countryside where we are so it is good to escape sometimes.
Well folks that is my short CV here
Kathy

| | | Re: Hello from StuartDH hi,
i'm new to all this but thought you might like to know a bit about me. i started on the Spring watch web site and am now hooked and was recomended this site so here i am.
i am 27 and married my husband and i live in the midlands. we are keen gardeners and have made ourselves a veg patch this year. we love wildlife and hope to encurage more to the garden as we develope it all. we have 2 cats who both have bells and only go out supervised. we also have hobbies which takes us outside into the local countryside. i have a slight dissability in my movement which doesn't hinder modern life but i'm less active than i would like to be.
we holiday in this country and have been to wales, scotland and last year to whitby where we saw a harbour seal! this year its cornwall (after the schools go back) and we are looking forward to the eden project.
my job is training for a logistics company so i drive about the country a lot i try to use the local roads and so see much of the country as i pass through.
and there you are that is me! |
