I want to thank you for starting this site. I hope I'll get the chance to use it often during my working day at the Natural History Museum in London. Being largely deskbound, I relay on others to keep me up to date on new events and records in our ever changing environment. The museum will be opening a centre for UK biodiversity in the new Darwin Centre (Phase 2 ) building in
2009, and like you, we recognise the need to inspire a new generation of young people to learn about the species with which we share our islands . best of luck to you.

By accident, while looking up to identify a specimen, googled it, and bingo there you were amongst others. Had a look and decided this one's for me! Looking forward to posting and reading posts.
p.s. I'm not the only ex-BBC forumer then

| | | Re: Hello from StuartDH Hi, Gerry Parker from Edinburgh here. I was enticed to join WAB to show off a recent picture of an Otter taken on the Water of Leith, a river running through Edinburgh from the Pentlands to the Firth of Forth.
I have pictures of around 80 bird species and some of them are even in focus!! I also have a few butterflies, other insects, several mammals and some plants (Haven't a clue about them) |

I just wanted to say how much we enjoy Autumn Watch, it is the quickest hour of TV watching in the day. Please tell Bill Oddie and Kate we really do feel sorry to see them standing out in the cold whilst we are sitting at home in our warm living room!! Seriously though,it is a wonderful programme as is Spring Watch and do appreciate how much work, Bill Kate and Simon, plus all the support team members goes into putting on the programme. One more thing, for the first time in our garden the other morning I saw a grey wagtail on our birdbath, which was such a treat.
That is all for now, but once again thank you for an excellent programme, oh, would also like to know if Bill is going to go shades of green in his hair for Spring Watch?
Bye

I'll try and answer these for you.
To make a new thread, click on Forums at the top of the page, select which category you wish to post the thread, you'll then see the New thread button on the left hand side of the screen.
You can't delete posts. Once made they're set in stone forever.
You'll become a "proper" member when you've made 25 posts.
Hope that's made it clear. |

| | | Re: Hello from StuartDH Good thread! I hope more people come and introduce themselves!
Great to know how this forum started too!
I'll introduce myself -
I'm Emma, 43 years in this world. I live in a beautiful part of the Pennines which I love.
I work with people who have mental health difficulties in an inner city area, and my love of wild life and wild places counteracts that and keeps me going!
I've loved wild places and the creatures and plants that inhabit them since childhood. Some of my favourite places in this country include the west coast of Scotland and the coast of Northumberland.
Lots of aspects of wildlife appeal to me, I'm fascinated by individual species such as seals, Stoats and Weasels; I love the ancient mythology attached to our wild mammals and old plant lore, and the thrill of an unexpected encounter with a wild creature is a visceral pleasure to me!
So that's me! |

| | | Re: Hello from StuartDH Hi StuartDH,
Would just like to say I have recently joined the site and find it very useful and informative, as well as very friendly. I work nights and it's nice to browse through WAB during the quiet periods. Nice to know there are lots of people getting together online because of common interests.
I am from New Zealand originally but am now living in beautiful Britain. I love nature and wildlife and there are still lots of creatures I have yet to see. Never seen a Badger yet but hope to one day! Am sure I will learn a lot about British wildlife on this lovely site.
P.S. How does one post a picture under their username?
Regards and thanks, Snowhound, Wiltshire

| | | Re: Hello from StuartDH Hi Stuart, Mike here, I'm nearly 50 and have been interested in wildlife all my life, had slowworms and lizards, rooks and loads of other things as a kid. Now I'm an MOD Police Officer, still working with wildlife when ever possible, have been our site's conservation officer for the last 13 yrs. Terrific site, well done. |

| | Re: Hello from StuartDH Hi all,
I just joined 'cause I was given a little field guide called "Food for Free" as a stocking filler for Christmas but it has quickly become my favourite prezzie. I never knew there was so much variety of edible plants and that several of the plants I always thought of as just weeds were actually edible, like Dandilions and Nettles.
The problem I have though is that I don't have enough confidence to identify plants can anyone tell me a good way to get started? Are there any books you would recommend? Courses? Web sites? etc...
I do know enough to realise that some wild flowers and fungi are poisonous and even the edible ones may have been sprayed with herbicide or pesticide and that some poisonous plants look remarkably similar to plants that the field guide says are edible. I also know that some wild plants are protected and that it is illegal to pick them, so I'm not just going to go wondering around my local park picking plants and eating them. I would however be interested in learning more about how to get started.
Many thanks |
