| | Do Nuthatches use tools Hello Everybody,
Every few days I'm visited by a Nuthatch.
After attacking the peanut holder it will search all the cracks in
a concrete plinth. After a while it will land on the path and select
a sunflower seed. Holding it in the tip of its beak it will fly back to
the crack and prod and poke with the seed, occasionally peering into
it. Is it trying to crack the seed, store the seed for later or pull out
an insect.
Whatever it is doing it seems to fail on all of them. It then does the
same thing underneath the fence.

| | | Re: Do Nuthatches use tools Hello and a warm welcome to WAB I am pretty clueless when it comes to the Nuthatch as we don't have them up my way but it's possibly storing the seed for later.
Someone more knowledgeable will answer correctly very soon.

I tended to think that it was trying to store them but
it inspects the cracks first, then it pokes its beak in,
then it flies down and looks for a sunflower seed. After
pushing it into the crack several times it will then fly to
another one and try the same thing. The seed each time
is fully intact.
