| | | Hello from London Hello, I'm new to this forum. I live in London and about 3 years ago moved from a house in a conservation area with a garden jam-packed with wildlife, to a house about 5mins drive down the road, all covered in gravel and no wildlife in sight.
I've since got rid of the gravel, planted a lawn, some flowers, a fruit tree, a buddlaeia, put in a tiny pond, grown some veg, and put out bird feeders. Well there's still no wildlife other than spiders and some cabbage white butterflies in the summer, and pigeons flying overhead pretty frequently. Very occasionally a blackbird appears and I've seen a robin once.
I'm now on a mission to get this sorted and have ordered a bug house and a roosting pocket, and put out some different bird foods (sunflower hearts, mealworms, suet-based stuff), and am about to go get some old logs to pile in one corner and put in a weeny bog garden.
If all of this doesn't attract at least SOMETHING then I'll give up. I miss the wildlife! There are lots of cats around (I have one as well) and I have two cocker spaniels.
Any tips appreciated for a wildlife draught in London! |

It certainly seems like you are doing all the right things to attract the wildlife, so it should only be a matter of time. In the meantime, you should find plenty of interest on WAB. Look forward to seeing your posts & pics. around the forums.
Regards
Mike.

| | | Re: Hello from London Hi Claire and a warm welcome. Sure you will get the wildlife into your garden eventually. Just a matter of patience. Took me over six months to attract Goldfinches into my garden and I live in open countryside more or less.

You will hopefully get something in the next few months. It can sometimes take time for them to "get going".
It helps if your neighbours have wildlife friendly gardens too. If there are trees and shrubs nearby this will help a lot, even if there are cats.
Best wishes,
Hedge

| | | Re: Hello from London Thanks for the warm welcome
There are parks nearby (the closest one is only 3mins walk and has a shallow river which has ducks, moorhens and even the odd kingfisher). My street had no trees at all until about 18 months ago when they planted some young Rowans and I did notice a small flock of starlings attacking the berries with gusto a few weeks ago, first time I've seen starlings in the area in the 3 years I've been there, so it proves the point that if the right food is around, they will find it!
I'm going to keep changing the bird food every few days and I've placed the feeders as close as possible to a young lilac tree I have and a fence panel covered in climbers. I also have a young apple tree and am planning to make some suet cake tonight to put in that (in a coconut shell).
Looking forward to trawling the forum for tips. |

| | | Re: Hello from London Hi Claire ,big welcome from me too.
I downsized back in March from a large mature garden with a great variety of birds and wild-life, to a bungalow with a tiny garden 30 ft by 14 and a strip at the side around 30 ft by 7.I also have a busy main road out front now.
I'm afraid we made our new garden easy to maintain, so did use gravel etc. back in May and i wondered if i would ever have the pleasure of the birds again.
I am thrilled
We have a variety of at least 16 different birds coming in now and a female Sparrowhawk took out a Collared dove a metre from our front window .Would quickly add ,my OH seen it i would have fainted.
I bought a great feeding station and i use lots of sunflower hearts. My biggest number of visitors outside of Starlings are Goldfinches.
Good luck |
