Welcome to WAB! I recommend you post this again in the General Wildlife category so others get the chance to see your problem and help you 
Are you after insects, birds or both? You've received good tips for the birds, so if you're into insects as well I can't recommend a 'wild area' enough. Just let one area grow wild, without grass-cutting or tidying. This enables inverts to become settled + established, breed and over-winter. Rotting logs would be good for beetles and springtails, flowers would work for hoverflies, bees, butterflies, etc.
It takes a while for birds and insects to settle in, but when they do it'll all be worth it!!
