Are you after insects, birds or both? You've received good tips for the birds, so if you're into insects as well I can't recommend a 'wild area' enough. Just let one area grow wild, without grass-cutting or tidying. This enables inverts to become settled + established, breed and over-winter. Rotting logs would be good for beetles and springtails, flowers would work for hoverflies, bees, butterflies, etc.
It takes a while for birds and insects to settle in, but when they do it'll all be worth it!!
