Where are they?

Hello everyone. I'm Pam an old lady who enjoys wildlife immensely but knows nothing beyond a few names. We live in Suffolk and have become increasingly mystified over the summer. We have no insects in the house, and I mean none. Not even a house fly. It's a sultry night tonight, every windowand door is open and all the lights are on and there are no insects. It's been like this all summer long. Anyone else experiencing this?

Re: Where are they?

Hello Pam, welcome to WAB. My house is the opposite. It is crawling with every flying insect you can think of. I like the Moths but the Mozzys are a no no.

Re: Where are they?

Hello Pam and a very warm welcome to WAB.
I must admit there's not so many in the house this year, just the odd fly or gnat.
Perhaps there has been some sort of spraying going on near you or the birds are having a feast! Hopefully the latter.
Hope to hear about Suffolks wildlife then. Great to have you onboard.ww

Re: Where are they?

Hi Pam, A very warm welcome to WAB you'll enyoy it here. Regards insects in the home I have to say we hav'nt had the normal amount of crane flies and other little beasties that do your head in when your minding your own and relaxing . But the Swallows and Swifts are everywhere this year and quite low flying during the evening time, perhaps they are keeping the flying insects down. However we do not appear to have as many house spiders as last year, they were every where and my wife (Jen) was going mental clearing away webs, at time it looked like scenes from the Munsters . But it will be interesting to see if others have noticed similar. Anyhow nice to have you on board Pam.

Geoff

Re: Where are they?

Hello Pam, a warm welcome to WAB from me. Our house is about the same as usual for the time of year so can't give any insight as to why you haven't any insects etc in your house.
Enjoy the sight and hope to see more from you.
Roger

Re: Where are they?

Hello Pam

Welcome to WAB from me too.

Now you mention it, I have to say I have seen less insects around the home this summer and that with all the windows permanently open for the last 2 weeks or so with all this hot weather.

However, out and about the hot weather seems to have resulted in an increase in all sorts .... most of which I can not identify!

Richard

Re: Where are they?

Hi Pam, welcome to WAB. Our house is a total opposite. Just last night 30-odd tiny baby spiders tried making a home amongst our books. We've also had lots of moths and flies. And wasps geting in I'm not sure why there isn't any where you are Though somebody might

Re: Where are they?

There are very few insects in my house. I rarely get any spiders which is fine as I am petrified of them. What is missing this year is the months. It was not until I read this thread that I realised they were missing. There are no swifts or swallows near me but there are lots of house sparrows and they seem to be increasing in numbers I am not sure if they would eat moths.

Yes it's hard to believe it's July

Seriously though Roger, we have seen the opposite this year. Coupled with the increasing bat population it seems a little strange. I've also noticed that plant foliage in the garden is prolific in most cases .... this probaly may account for the large numbers of moths.

John

Re: Where are they?

Hello Pam.........You are only old if you say you are old, so stop it now........
Welcome to WAB young lady.
Have noticed loads of insect outside the house, and loads of insect eaters too, but inside the house, there are not as many insects as last year, apart from when my wife left our bedroom light on one evening and I had to squash loads of mozzies before I could settle down to sleep (get them, before they get you)...........
