| | hello from me.. I have just stumbled across this forum and read about someone who has flies in their loft after having a rat problem sorted, we have had the same problem without the flies. We had the council out to put down somwe bait to rid us of the rats we had in our loft, but unfortunately one of the rats died under our floor boards in the front room and one visible one died in the loft the others as far as we could see had peed and pooed as well as nested in our new insulation.
We had to pull up our carpet as the smell had been horrendours since last monday and no amount of cleaning got rid of it, so ihave had a new carpet fitted, the rat under the floor board had a mound of dirt which stank of wee and also the stench from the maggots which were present in the rat, had contaminated all it had come into contact with. We also had to bag up all of the insulator which was in the loft and bring it down into the garden and are not finding the council very forthcoming, i am waiting for a phone call from the environment officer so i can get some sense from someone as to how we are to get rid of all this infested waste. I have spoke to someone at rentokill and he is going to phone me about where we stand legally with this.
I think it is disgusting that people are left high and dry with such severe health and safety issues as these with no one acting on a report of rats. I was informed by the pest control man that because we are at the end of a six house terrace our loft is where they are sleeping, nesting, we found lots of burrows in the loft insulation. The man said someone further up is the food source, surely the council should investigate, any way they will once i have finished, sorry its long for a first post. And hello to every one. |

I'm sorry about your pest problem. I hope someone stops it at the source.
Otherwise, someone on here advocated an ultrasonic device. Someone on LBC had 8 sets (available from B&Q) and cleared their house in 4 week. As I understand it, it is inaudible, and doesn't affect larger pets.
Good luck.

| | | Re: hello from me.. Thanks for the reply, i read about those but also read that in time they dont work cause the rats get used to the sound, very clever are these brown rats. Thanks anyway, it is an idea. |

I think the smell and the flies will go once they have done their job of cleaning up the rat. This is my experiance anyway after the cats have clearly brought in a mouse which has then died somewhere in the room.
Perhaps next time in control use specific rat trap at least then you'll be able to remove the bodies. |
