Hi from Mr Toad

I live in Sheffield and have had an established garden pond for at least 20 years that has a 'colony' of frogs and a couple of newts (as far as i can see, but they are a bit shy).

I would like to link up with someone who has some spare toad spawn so that I can introduce them to my pond.

Re: Hi from Mr Toad

Hi Mr Toad and welcome to the site. There is a nasty fungal/viral disease going around at the moment it is advised not to transfer spawn. If you get the habitat right they may come of their own free will..

Thank you for the info about the virus. I now think I have heard about a frog virus that they predict could wipe them out. Hope thats not true.

When I started my pond, there were very few ponds in our area. I now have supplied either intensionally or of their own free will a number of garden ponds in the area.

How can I create a habitat to encourage toads to come as I have not seen any in the 26 years I've lived here?

Also I have seen Hedgehogs from time to time, but how can I encourage them to take refuge in my garden?

Thank you for your help.

Re: Hi from Mr Toad

All I have done is put woodpiles around the garden. Grow shrubs and low vegetation around the fences. Left lots of the borders are untidy. Have compost bins and I tend to plant too close together and I don't use pesticides..
