Hello from Kent!

Hello everyone,

Just thought I'd say hello. I've been very impressed by the friendly and supportive atmosphere on this site, and the excellent photos people post. The identification advice offered by your members is also a great idea, especially for those harder to ID groups.

I've been lucky enough to work in nature conservation for the last 12 years (where does the time go!). The last 7 of those years I have spent working in Kent. I enjoy walking, cycling and photography. As this is starting to sound like a CV i'll shut up now .

All the best

Steve

Re: Hello from Kent!

Wow, thanks for the quick responses!

As far as work goes I am one of the small team of wardens that manage the nature reserves for Kent Wildlife Trust. My specific patch is in west kent and covers a mix of sites including chalk downland, woodland, marshes and even former chalk pits.

I'm afraid i'm no expert in wildlife ID, but I'm a decent enough field naturalist and I am happy to help out where ever possible.

Kent at this time of year is a lovely place, Lady orchids flowering amongst the bluebell woods, everything just starting to emerge after the winter (even though today is a bit grey and windy!). I'm always happy to help people with advice about where to see wildlife in the county. I'll try and post some pictures if I can work out how to resize them!

Thanks again for the warm welcome!

Weeksy

Re: Hello from Kent!

Nice website you have there Cherrybee.

I have very fond memories of the Exmouth area. I started out as a trainee with Devon Wildlife Trust and spent alot of time working on Bystock nature reserve near Exmouth. I love the heathlands in that area.

Re: Hello from Kent!

Hello. Have both you Kent 'Steves' been to Northward Hill RSPB reserve at High Halstow?
They do great evening walks and morning ones, come to that, and they're all a very friendly bunch that love birds. Julie-Wild-Woman of Kent.

Re: Hello from Kent!

Hi Wild Woman - I have been to Northwood Hill several times. It is excellent for butterflies. Used to be brilliant for White Letter Hairstreak but they are scarce there now. Still good for Purple Hairstreak though.

Re: Hello from Kent!

Hi Newhythebirder (Steve), nice blog you have there with some great photos. One of my work sites is not far from your birding spots, Holborough Marshes on the outskirts of Snodland. Its a nice reserve (apart from a bit of a motorbike problem ) where we are trying to get back breeding lapwing and redshank.

Wild-Woman, yes Northwood Hill is great especially watching the breeding herons. As Steve says I last went there to see the White Letter hairstreaks.

Hi Canonman, thanks for the welcome.

all the best

Steve
