Just had to say a belated hello and welcome from me too - it's so lovely to hear wildlife news from Kent. I grew up wandering one of the Kent Wildlife Trust's chalk downland reserves in West Kent (maybe even one of the reserves you warden!) - and often feel homesick for all those wonderful orchids and amazing Kentish downland wildlife. My husband and I used to run a conservation volunteers group in Kent before we moved here to Bristol 12 years ago, and our group often used to team up with KWT vols to do work for the reserve wardens in the East of the county....
We were back there at the beginning of this month enjoying loads of nostalgia - and the wonderful orchids....
Very nice to meet you here...

Thanks for the welcome. Sorry for the delay in replying, things have been a bit busy work wise .I read your post about the visit to see the monkey orchids, i'm glad you had such a good time! They really are charismatic plants.
I've moved the opposite way from you, from the west country to kent. Despite the rather fast pace of life here I really love kent. It is such a diverse county and my real interest is in chalk and limestone habitats.
All the best

Good to hear from you - yes, it was fantastic to see the Monkey orchids doing so well! It seems like an age since we were last there volunteering!
We didn't realise what a fast pace of life there is in Kent, until we moved West. They know how to chill out here in Bris'ol! Fortunately, the Garden of England has as you say, all those tranquil, diverse wildlife habitats to escape to. I love chalk habitats too...got my fix at Pewsey Downs NNR in Wiltshire just last weekend!
All the best,
Willow |

Hi Nightshade - Thanks for telling us about that! I've just dashed to my copy of the Observer - and seen the story! But, I'm really confused....coz the picture looks like a Bee orchid to me! I've looked at some pics of the Woodcock orchid online and it looks different from the lady's photo! There doesn't seem to be any confirmation from anyone like English Nature in the article....and it does look very, very like a Bee orchid to me (but I'm probably totally missing something!) |
