| | | identify this bird I have a niger seed holder which is regularly visited at this tome of year by goldfinches. But today am receiving visits from an unidentified bird. About same size as goldfinch. Brown with darker streaks and darker wing bars. Buff chest turning pale on belly, brown streaked. Yellow bill with darker shading round face. Closest I came on ID chart was a twite. But as I hear they extremely rare in South, is it possible to see one in a garden in Hornchurch area of Essex? |

| | | Re: identify this bird Extremely unlikely. They tend to go round in flocks and feed right on the coast edge on seeds on rough ground.

| | | Re: identify this bird After days of gloom now have some light to see more features, mainly dark bib and red/brown cap. Turns out to be redpoll (not as exciting as twite but new to my garden!)
