Unfortunately I only work as a porter at London Zoo at the moment, but I am using this as a stepping stone to move onto a more animal related role (hopefully).
London Zoo is part of ZSL, an international charity which also owns Whipsnade Wild Animal Park.
ZSL do actually do some important conservation work involving UK species which some of you have already mentioned such as the British field cricket. Current UK conservation work I believe includes Corncrakes, UK Crayfish and rare bat species.
Again thankyou for such a warm welcome. I am particuarly interested in native UK mammals, so will probably be spending a lot of time on the mammals forum.

Adam. | I personally think you are very fortunate even as a porter you must see quite a bit of the animals but what a plus for you when you get the chance to work with them.Good luck in your ambition |

Yes absolutely, I did a bird survey at dawn at Dudley zoo when there was only me, the keepers and the porters there and I got to stroke baby reindeernoses and everything it was lovely.
My advice as to getting involved with the research and conservation is start small (go for invertebrates because there are fewer people wanting to work with them) and offer to help or ask to shadow when they are counting adults in the outdoor pens etc.... |

I am going to start volunteering at a Wildlife Aid centre in Surrey in 2 weeks to gain some experience working directly with animals. This should help, and also be very interesting.
Does anyone else here work with animals or volunteer for animal related causes?
