I was just wondering, as you're in north Devon, are you familiar with Peppercombe Valley? Its a glorious wooded valley running down to the sea, about half way between Bideford and Hartland (privately owned but with a public footpath running its length).
I spent a couple of holidays there when I was a teenager (about 40 years ago) and just starting to get interested in nature, and the wildlife there was fantastic. I have often wondered how the place has fared since. Do you know it at all?

| | | Re: Living in Devon Hi,
I am really embarrassed to say that I have never been to Peppercombe Valley. There are so many places I want to visit here but as yet have not been able to. I only moved here the end of August. But I googled it and it looks gorgeous, so it is going to the top of my list. According to the web site dedicated to it, the valley is doing great. Take a look yourself. |

| | | Re: Living in Devon Hi Devon,
it doesn't ring a bell to me but why not look it up on this site, there are a lot of photographs.
that must have been a great encounter and from what you say it could indeed be a juvenile, as it doesn't seem to know the dangers of the town and be so naif. Devon Birds Picture Gallery | Devon Birds

The bird is tough from that description, but that behaviour is very like Robin - quite possibly a juvenile, with no red chest - have a look at some google images?
Cheers

| | | Re: Living in Devon a further thought, they are often seen about feet and tables in car parks - Chaffinch - with white wing bars, depending on light for dull colour, a female/immature might do it?
Cheers
