| | | New member learning wildlife gardening Hi everyone
I'm Christina, currently in Oldham but moving to St Helens soon. I've been working on a large garden of an elderly lady in St Helens for a couple of months (one day a weekend). It was a jungle until we got some men in to clear it and I'm now designing the future garden which I intend to make wildlife friendly.
I joined this site to pick up some tips as I'm new to this. I'm also going to have a go at garden woodwork. I intend to start by making planters, but I also want to make my own birdboxes and Hedgehog boxes if there are any in that vicinity.
The first thing I did after the clearance was to put up a hanging bird feeder and we've had goldfinches, greenfinches and great tits appear, and of course, our good old friendly robins. |

Welcome to Wab!!
What a fantastic opportunity you have there!
I wouldn't know where to begin but there are many knowledgeable people here who will be only too pleased to help!!
Don't forget to take photos at different stages so you can see how much hard work you've done as well and then maybe upload them here so we can see how you are getting on.
Look forward to seeing you around the forums and good luck with the garden it sounds like you are already having success with all the birds that visit now!!

| | | Re: New member learning wildlife gardening Thank you for your warm welcomes.
Last week I started shredding and chipping all the sawn off tree branches, etc. I purchased 3 large composters from the local council, £10 each and started the composting. I also started a log pile.
I will have 2 projects to do. The one mentioned already and the back yard of the house I will be renting, which is an end terrace. I had a look at goosey's website and I want to do something like that. I wasn't thinking of a pond for the back yard but I am now! I want to construct a pond for the large garden.
I have some photos already and movies. I'll make a thread and post the photos as the work progresses.
Trees. The garden has 3 large silver birches, 1 cherry tree, 1 leylandi (I think) a holly and 2 others that I do not know. One is evergreen.
So far I have found 3 dead collared doves on the ground in about 4 weeks. |
