Wink Im new to this site and I could do with a bit of advice please

I have always been facinated by wildlife and nature. As a child my Dad would always take me out in to Derbyshire every weekend. He taught me all he knew over the years.
I am now married with two boys of my own. As they are both under 2 years old some people think that they are too young to start to learn about wildlife. My wife has had a typical City girl upbringing and she had never set foot in Derbyshire until she met me.
I am wanting to take my family somewhere to show them Deer in the wild. I realise we will have to get up very early but with both my lads being under 2 we are used to it. I live inbetween Barnsley and Doncaster in South Yorkshire. Does anyone know where we could see Deer in the wild???
Any advice would be apprieciated.

There does seem to be 2 threads on the go .

Hi Guinesss - welcome! I don't think children are ever too young to involve with nature, get them hooked while they are young and it gives us all hope for the future. I have no idea about where to see deer in the area you have asked about - someone will probably know though. There may be old threads in the mamal forum you can look through which will point you in the right direction - good luck I hope you get to see some .

Hello, hello Guiness!
And welcome to Wab from me too!
Sounds like a wonderful idea to take your family out and about especially when they are so young.
Have you had any luck yet in finding a place to go?? If not you could always start a thread on the 'Mammal Forum' as goosey said, or maybe the' Wild Places and Geography' someone should be able to help you out there.
Anyway, whatever you do have fun and enjoy yourself on Wab too!
Suzanne

Hi Guiness,

I am new to this site too so welcome to WAB.

I live on Exmoor and there is never a day that goes by that I do not see Deer. They are very Wild and very, very different to Park deer in terms of their behaviour and even down to how they look.

It is an amzing part of the country but perhaps too far to get up and go in the early hours of the morning with the children. It would make a great weekend away though if Deer are your fascination. Just a thought.

Officer

Hi Guiness and a big welcome from me!

I've seen deer during the daytime at Malham Tarn, but it is in North Yorkshire so may be a bit of a trek with 2 youngsters in tow. However, you just carry on and teach them as much about the great outdoors as possible, there's just so much out there that will keep them in awe!

Hi Guiness,

My partner doesn't go with me on walks in the countryside, she complains that her feet get too sore. The funny thing is that if we are in town she will walk for hours looking through shops, especially for shoes etc. without the slightest complaint, while I do the moaning

Your children are definitely not to young to be introduced to nature. I have some young friends with a 27 months old little boy, his dad is passionate about nature, particularly spiders and other creepy-crawlies, his mum prefers shopping. When the little-one was only a few weeks old I went for a walk with him and his dad around a local nature reserve, all the way round his dad was showing him the flowers and telling him their names.

A few weeks ago I went with him and his dad to Natureland in Skegness. Natureland is mainly about seals but it does have other animals, one of which is a crocodile. The little-one when he saw the crocodile stopped looked at it and then, without any prompting from either his dad or me said, quite clearly and definitely, crocodile. Now he hadn't seen a crocodile before except for pictures in books and on the telly and I thought, 'watch-out Sir David you've got competition'.

I think his dad is right, whatever the future holds for the little-one, whatever form of employment he ultimately takes, a love of nature installed into him now will stay with him and he will not willingly harm nature in the future.
