Hi Suzsted. I used to have two pet rats (Abbey and Xena). Gorgeous they were and very affectionate. Unfortunately they both developed dreadful tumours and had to be put down. Apparently they were due to too much feeding of protein. I must admit they were very greedy and I just couldn't resist feeding them all kinds of tidbits. I do hope yours don't develop them as it is heartbreaking to see.

Regards, Snowhound

Hiya,

We have 11 rats and they are wonderful pets, but unfortunately are quite suceptable to respiratory illnesses and tumours.

Snowhound, most tumours are caused by hormones, hence if you have a female rat spayed, she is much, much less likely to develop tumours. It's nothing to do with too much protein, though a diet high in animal fat can be a contributing factor.

Hi Rats,

Thanks very much for this bit of information. Someone told me it was too much protein but they may well have been wrong. Makes more sense what you have said - both my rats were un-spayed females and I did feed them a fair amount of animal fat - they loved cheese, ham and bacon. I found it so hard to resist them. Thanks again.
