Hiya,
We have 11 rats and they are wonderful pets, but unfortunately are quite suceptable to respiratory illnesses and tumours.
Snowhound, most tumours are caused by hormones, hence if you have a female rat spayed, she is much, much less likely to develop tumours. It's nothing to do with too much protein, though a diet high in animal fat can be a contributing factor. |

Thanks very much for this bit of information. Someone told me it was too much protein but they may well have been wrong. Makes more sense what you have said - both my rats were un-spayed females and I did feed them a fair amount of animal fat - they loved cheese, ham and bacon. I found it so hard to resist them.
